I needed today in a way I can’t even begin to explain.  I needed today like you need a drink of water when you’re running a marathon on a hot Summer day.  We really didn’t do anything all that spectacular.  We just went to the creek;  we played there for almost four hours before driving the forty-five minutes home.   The girls double chocolate dared me to climb up to the top of the jungle gym,  so I did.  We waded in the creek;  it stole one of my flip flops.  We played with balloons, ate PB&J sandwiches for lunch and McDonalds for dinner.   Snapping pictures on my phone, and making the occasional update on Facebook, was the extent of stress.  Alight scratched her hand pretty bad;  some park rangers on scene came to her rescue with a band-aid and smile.  A stranger at the park asked me if I’d like her to take a picture of the girls and I atop the jungle gym.  And a friend or two totally made my day by graciously spending a few minutes communicating with me.   It was a good day, one I needed in order to stop putting off announcing the book’s release.

I needed a good day to remind me that life isn’t all about the pain.  Life is about the sunshine and putting our bare feet in the grass;  it’s about playing with our kids and making memories that aren’t just cool pictures on Pinterest.  I needed a good day to remind me that pain is just a rushing river.  It’s mighty and sometimes the current gets strong;  but, with time, compassion and grace, all rivers can be crossed.
