Dark, suspenseful, grief.

This book is rough, there are many triggers and it is not for the faint of heart by any means. I wasn’t expecting it to go the way that it did. It was written so well, and it is sad so be warned. It gets dark, and there is torture among other things. I will say it is probably one of the best books I have ever read, I honestly think it should be a movie. It gets descriptive a bit and, like I said, it gets dark. Just be prepared before you start reading, once you do you cant stop until its done.

Heartbreaking Story

This book is intense. Five teenage girls get kidnapped by a grieving father who blames them for his son’s suicide, and it does not hold back on the dark stuff. The multiple viewpoints can feel like a lot, but the story really makes you feel for each girl. It is brutal and sad, but also weirdly hopeful in the end when they fight back. Just be ready for some really heavy scenes. Not an easy read, but a powerful one.

All the Content Warnings

Based on the genre and description, I was expecting this to be like Pretty Little Liars, but I think in the end it veers much darker than that series (at least, the earlier entries). It can get quite horrific at times, so if you’re looking for something light-hearted this might not be for you.

I enjoyed the way the author wrote the characters and group dynamics (especially early on). The premise of a father taking revenge too far is fantastic, and I feel like the author explored it in a way that was satisfying as a whole. As others have said, the author is good at straightforward narration that helps you picture scenes without getting in the way of the story.

On the other hand, there was a pervasive misuse of the colon (:) that irritated me, as well as some other proofreading misses that others have called out. I don’t think it was necessarily bad enough to take me out of the story, but enough that it nagged at me while I was reading. If I had to reconcile the good with the bad, I guess I’d summarize by calling this a bit of a flawed gem.
