What the Past Carries: Historical Fiction
History is often recorded through dates, governments, wars and the names of people powerful enough to be remembered.
These stories look elsewhere.
They follow the girl left unnamed in a bog, the child hidden inside an institution, the young woman standing beneath a government that has decided her body belongs to the state, and the people whose ordinary lives were pulled into machinery built long before they understood its purpose.
The settings are different. Ireland. Poland. Germany. Romania. Rwanda. Cambodia. Papua New Guinea. The questions beneath them are not. Who is believed? Who is protected? What survives when a person, a family or an entire people is marked for erasure?
These novels do not use history as scenery. They enter it to ask what it cost the people who had to live there.
