I wasn’t quite sure what to expect when I picked up Whisperroot, but wow… this book completely pulled me in and refused to let go. By the time I finished, I was already thinking about the characters and story long after I had turned the final page.
Tiffini Johnson has crafted a haunting, atmospheric tale that feels equal parts historical fiction, folklore, and dark fairy tale. The setting is richly detailed, and the sense of unease that lingers throughout the story is masterfully done. The village of Myreska feels alive with secrets, superstition, fear, and generations of silence that weigh heavily on every page.
What struck me most was the way the novel explores the treatment of women and girls, especially those who are different, outspoken, gifted, or simply unwilling to conform. The story is heartbreaking at times, but it is also powerful, showing how truth can survive even when people try to bury it. The themes of memory, resilience, and the consequences of silence are woven beautifully throughout the narrative.

I just finished reading Whisperroot: A Hushwood Tale and I’m still processing it. It’s a hauntingly beautiful, though definitely difficult, read. Intrigued read

The story is about girls being stolen from a small town. The Hushwood forest is interesting as it seems to know all and seems like a living entity on its own. Not quite love, but worth reading
I am not really sure I liked this book. However, I do think it’s good, even if it is not my cup of tea. The writing is lush, almost hypnotic. It surprised me that the Hushwood felt alive in a slow, breathing way, almost as if it was watching everything. The town choosing not to see, not to speak, not to name what’s happening to the girls is uncomfortable on purpose.
What I really liked about this book was the tone and the imagery. It keeps balancing between half-fairy and half-warning. Where I struggled a bit is that the symbolism isn’t subtle. The author almost pulls your hand to guide you to it to a point that it feels forced.
Maybe this is something that would sit better with a different reader. For me it was not as satisfying.

Intriguing tale!
A very intriguing tale told from the viewpoint of a town. Young girls go missing and this is their story of being remembered. This story will hit you close to home as even though it is a fantasy, it is close to realistic horrors that happen in today’s world. At the end of the book there are bookclub questions and an interview with the author. This was a good read.

There is a cult, suspense, mystery and sadness. It is written as a tale of old with a mystic vibe.

Heartbreaking to the very end
I didn’t know what to expect going in on this book but it is absolutely heartbreaking and dark. Especially the part regarding the “punishments” to rid them of sin. While it is dark and tear jerking, it is also a wonderful, bittersweet story of what probably happened back in the day. It reminded me of the Salem Witch Trials with a forest twist. I cried in parts but I would recommend it to anyone who likes the stories to run parallel to our own.

Fascinating
A good story about religious groups that have taken their faith too far, in my opinion. As you read, you see the harshness of their reality, their burden to bear as a community in a warped cult. You feel their sadness, their confusion about moving on, and not causing turmoil to keep living comfortably enough, but then you get the children’s view. No spoilers. You must read to find out.
